Character: Golbez
Series: Final Fantasy IV/Dissidia
Age: 30
History: Give your power to Meteor! + Dissidia
Canon Point: post-Dissidia, post-FFIV

Personality:
In folk tales, the Golubac fly is born out of the corpse of a dragon. In the same way, Golbez’s corruption was born out of the death of his family; his father’s murder, his mother’s death in childbirth, and his own abandoning of his baby brother Cecil, at the urging of Zemus. This was his first step down the pathway of darkness, a path that continued for twenty more years and led, ultimately, to his attempts to destroy the planet, in accordance with Zemus’s schemes. Under Zemus’s control, Golbez committed many horrors. He murdered and kidnapped, brainwashed and blackmailed, causing destruction in nearly every city-state across the Blue Planet, and countless instances of harm to those close to Cecil, most notably kidnapping Rosa and controlling Kain’s mind not once, but twice. With his support, people like Dr. Lugae were able to commit horrors as well, turning people into monsters.

These actions were all committed because Golbez was under the control of Zemus. Still, those actions affected him long after his uncle Fusoya broke Zemus’s control over his mind. The darkness inherent in him, for example, prevented him from using the power of the Blue Planet’s crystals in order to defeat Zemus, when Golbez and Fusoya went to the moon together to defeat him. It was also what led him to be summoned by the God Chaos to fight against his brother once more, in Dissidia. Serving the darkness left an undeniable impact on the way Golbez creates his plans. Rather than seeking out allies to work alongside, he keeps the goals and the measures he intends to take to achieve them to himself, to reveal only when he is forced to, or when it is beneficial. And when he gives advice and help, it comes most often in a riddle-like or contradictory form. Dissidia gives a number of examples of this. In advising the Onion Knight about whether to go after his enemy the Cloud of Darkness and rescue his friend Terra, for example, he seems to praise the Onion Knight’s decision to use his head and avoid a battle he can’t win, only to turn it around with his final statement, that if the Onion Knight cannot trust in what his head tells him, then perhaps he should rely on his heart. We also see Golbez attack Cecil directly, as an attempt to try and help his brother obtain the crystal and allow Cosmos’s warriors to win the war. The reason he provokes this fight is because he believes that Cecil’s allies is a weakness, one that he intends to correct.

The reason he acts in these ways becomes obvious through one of his conversations with Cecil. He calls himself “Cecil’s shadow”- one who could not accept the darkness, but who is not worthy of the light. In the end, even as he does his best to atone for the things he has done under Zemus’s control, he finds that his actions are still not worthy of a hero, or of a good person, and though he can take advantage of that role in order to gain information and help in the ways that someone who was nothing but a traditional hero could not, he does not believe it absolves him of his crimes. This is why he does not defect to Cosmos completely, and why he does not remain on the Blue Planet, after Zemus is defeated. Even if some day his actions can be forgiven, he feels that day has not yet arrived. The fact that he continues to use the name Golbez is a sign of that.

Skills and Abilities:
Described as a “thaumaturge” in Dissidia, Golbez is an extremely accomplished mage, able to cast high-level elemental spells such as Thundaga, Firaga, and Blizzaga, as well as the formidable spell Meteor. His abilities in Dissidia reflect this, though his magic in Dissidia consists primarily of lightning-based spells and dark magic. A list of his attacks in Dissidia can be found here, though without the technology for it present, he will not be able to perform moves like Attack System or Gravity System. In addition, he has no Shadow Dragon to assist him.

Golbez is an unusual mage in that his ability to use magic doesn’t prevent him from wearing armor or wielding a sword, but he is no master, and is much more likely to resort to spells in order to defend or attack. In addition, all of the spells he knows are Black Magic, and he is incapable of any White Magic or other sorts of healing spells. His heritage as a half-lunarian also makes him susceptible to mind control.
